An estimated grade is an AI-assisted visual estimate reviewed by Sprunger Originals. It is not an official PSA grade or a guarantee of the grade a card will receive. This service does not verify autographs.
Some alterations, such as trimming, restoration, recolouring, pressed creases, cleaning, wax or gloss enhancement, can't be reliably detected from photos. PSA examines the card in hand and may return it as altered or ungradable even when our estimate is favourable.
Upload your card photos
Attach your photos here and they go with your request. The front and back are required. The eight corner close-ups are recommended: they let us check the corners closely and give you a more accurate check and estimate. A close-up of his head and shoulders is optional and helps us check the print. Angled light shots of the front and back are optional too, and help us check the surface.
Photo tips (please read)
- Good, even light. Daylight from a window works well. Turn off the flash.
- Out of the sleeve if you can. Take the card out of a penny sleeve or top loader if it's safe to do so: plastic glare hides print detail and edges.
- No glare. If it's safe, take the card out of the sleeve or top loader. Graded slabs stay closed; tilt the slab slightly to lose the reflection.
- Plain dark background. Shoot the card on something black or dark (cloth or paper works). It makes the white borders, edges and corners stand out.
- Full card in frame for the front and back, shot straight on.
- In focus. For corners, move in close and tap the corner on your screen to focus.
- Head and shoulders close-up (optional): use a loupe or your phone's macro or zoom and get as close as it will focus on his face, helmet and shoulders. Keep it sharp; a blurry close-up won't count against your card.
- Angled light (optional): Turn off overhead lights, place one lamp low to the side so light skims across the card, and shoot at a slight angle. This helps spot pressed creases, wax or uneven gloss. Front and back if you can.
- File size: JPG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC, up to 19 MB per photo. Full-size phone photos are fine, so please don't shrink them. The photos upload one batch at a time, so a full set can take a minute or two on mobile data; Wi-Fi is faster.

Real, fake or reprint? And what might it grade?
You have an ungraded or graded Gretzky rookie card and want to know if it is real. Avoid the misinformation and ridicule often seen in social media groups about this concern. Choose what you would like on this page:
- Real, fake or reprint? We compare your photos with the known traits of the 1979-80 #18 rookie card (O-Pee-Chee and Topps) to check that it is genuine and not a counterfeit or a later reprint, such as the 1992 O-Pee-Chee 25th Anniversary or 1998 Blast from the Past cards.
- Estimated grade. An estimate of the grade your card might get, with notes on centering, corners, edges and surface.
- Both. The authenticity check and the estimated grade together.
NOTE: Graded cards can be fake too. Fraudsters are using counterfeit flips (labels) and fake cards in slabs. If your card is graded, you can add the grading company and cert number.

How to order:
- You need photos of a Gretzky rookie card: your own card, or screenshots of one you're thinking of buying.
- Choose what you would like: Real, fake or reprint?, Estimated grade, or Both.
- Upload your photos below. The front and back are required. The eight corner close-ups are recommended and make the check and estimate more accurate. You can also add an optional close-up of his head and shoulders (loupe or phone macro), which helps us check the print, and optional angled light shots of the front and back, which help us check the surface. If you already know about any flaws (soft corners, creases, residue, marks, stains or size concerns), you can tick them and add a note so we know where to look closely. That part is optional too. Before adding to your cart, you'll tick a box allowing us to keep your photos and results in our private Gretzky rookie reference library for research. Your name and contact details are never published. Don't have the card in hand? Screenshots from a listing are fine, but sharp photos out of the sleeve, on a plain dark background, let us check much more.
- Add it to your cart and check out. It's free, and your photos go with your order.
- We review your photos and send you the results by email.
Please note: Some alterations, such as trimming, restoration, recolouring, pressed creases, cleaning, wax or gloss enhancement, can't be reliably detected from photos. PSA examines the card in hand and may return it as altered or ungradable even when our estimate is favourable.
