Holding onto a 2010 autograph from Connor McDavid is a decision that demonstrates significant foresight, given McDavid's rise to stardom in the hockey world. Here are several reasons why this piece of memorabilia is highly valuable and foresighted:

1. Early Career Memorabilia

In 2010, Connor McDavid was still a young player, years away from being drafted into the NHL. Acquiring his autograph at this stage would have been a prescient move, recognizing his potential early on. Early career memorabilia is often more valuable because it captures the athlete before they became a household name.

2. Exceptional Talent Recognized Early

Connor McDavid was identified as a prodigious talent from a young age. His remarkable skills were evident during his time with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he demonstrated exceptional speed, agility, and hockey IQ. Recognizing his potential early and obtaining his autograph showcases an understanding of his likely trajectory to greatness.

3. NHL Achievements

Since being drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft, McDavid has exceeded expectations. He has won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player three times (2017, 2021, 2023), the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer five times (2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023), the Ted Lindsay Award as the most outstanding player four times (2017, 2018, 2021, 2023), the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the leading goal scorer once (2023), and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP during the Stanley Cup playoffs (2024). He has led the Oilers to two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances (2024, 2025), reached 1,100 career points in November 2025 as the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to do so, and has been named to numerous All-Star teams. He also scored the overtime-winning goal for Team Canada in the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off tournament final. Holding onto his early autograph connects a fan to the beginning of this illustrious career.

4. Winter Olympics

Making his Olympic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, McDavid helped lead Team Canada to a silver medal in men's ice hockey, finishing with a tournament-leading 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists) in six games to set a new single-Olympics scoring record in the NHL era. He served as stand-in captain for the injured Sidney Crosby in the semifinal and gold medal game, earning MVP honors, Best Forward recognition, and a spot on the All-Star Team despite Canada's 2-1 overtime loss to Team USA in the final.

5. Other International Honours

Before his NHL dominance, Connor McDavid represented Canada in several junior international tournaments, earning multiple medals and individual accolades.

  • 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge: Named to the All-Star Team after helping Team Canada - Ontario to a gold medal.
  • 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships: Gold medal with Team Canada; named Best Forward and Tournament MVP with 14 points (8 goals, 6 assists) in seven games.
  • 2015 World Junior Championships: Gold medal with Team Canada; selected to the Media All-Star Team after recording 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in seven games despite an early hand injury.
  • 2016 IIHF World Championship: Gold medal with Team Canada; contributed 9 points (1 goal, 8 assists) in 10 games as the youngest player on the roster.

6. Historical Significance

McDavid is already considered one of the best players of his generation, and many compare him to legends like Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby. Memorabilia from the early stages of his career will likely appreciate in value as he continues to break records and achieve milestones.

7. Scarcity and Demand

Autographs from early in a player’s career are generally rarer than those obtained during their peak years. As McDavid's fame grows, so does the demand for his memorabilia. A 2010 autograph represents a scarce item from a period when fewer people recognized his potential, making it more coveted among collectors.

8. Emotional and Historical Value

Beyond monetary worth, an early autograph from McDavid holds emotional and historical value. It represents a connection to his journey and the early belief in his capabilities. For passionate fans and collectors, this can be a gem in the collection.

9. The Original Auto

Back in 2010, I had the unique experience of working alongside Georges Laraque, promoting synthetic ice to consumers and businesses.  We had booth #1152 at The Hockey Expo, held from April 23 to 25 at the International Centre in Mississauga.

Connor and his friends (likely Christian D., Matthew B., Connor S., and Jesse W.) were hanging out at the Expo on the Saturday.  Being from the small town of Newmarket, I immediately recognized them.  We often crossed paths in our local hockey rinks either coaching or watching my own sons play.

The buzz among parents who lived near the McDavids' was always about Connor—his relentless drive to improve his hockey skills was legendary. If he wasn't perfecting his moves on his backyard rink, he'd be out on the driveway, rollerblading tirelessly. Recognizing his potential and determination, I seized the moment and asked Connor for his autograph. After all, this 13-year-old was already shaping up to be a future star.  I think now is the perfect time to present this to the hockey world.
